Aquarium Fish & Corals

RedFin supply most aquarium livestock including fish, corals, live rock and aquatic plants.  Unlike most of the aquarium shops found along Tung Choi "goldfish street", we focus on fully quarantined livestock which has been in our aquariums for at least 30 days before being supplied to clients.  This ensures all of our aquarium fish and coral are free from diseases and parasites which can cause a many problems when introduced into an aquarium.  All of our livestock is sustainably sourced and imported legally following CITES (Convention on International Trade in Engendered Species) regulations.

Koi Fish (錦鯉魚)

Koi are a hardy fish that can be acclimatised to a wide range of water conditions and temperatures. This makes them the perfect fish for outdoor ponds and water features.

According to Feng Shui, fish represent wealth and prosperity because the actual word in Chinese for fish 魚 also translates to “abundance” 裕, either black or red, also symbolizes wealth and success.

Discus fish (铁饼鱼)

Discus fish (Symphysodon sp.) are a genus of cichlids native to the Amazon river basin in South America. They are popular freshwater aquarium fish due to their distinctive shape, behavior, and bright colors and patterns. They are aquacultured in several countries in Asia which means they rarely have to be taken from the wild making them an environmentally friendly alternative to wild collected fish.

Arowana Dragon Fish (龍魚)

These popular aquarium fish have a special significance in Chinese culture due to their resemblance to a Chinese dragon. Keeping an arowana is believed by the Chinese to bring good luck and prosperity due to its red color and coin-like scales.

Arowana all belong to the same species (Scleropages formosus) but there are numerous different colour varieties available. Some of the most common varieties include the Silver Asian Arowana, Gold Crossback Arowana, Red Tailed Golden Arowana and Blood Red Arowana.

For more information about keeping Arowana check out this Arowana Care Guide.

Saltwater Aquarium Fish

RedFin supply a range of saltwater aquarium fish collected from locations all over the world including Indonesia, the Philippines, Hawaii and Australia. We focus on aquacultured and sustainably sourced fish.

When adding saltwater fish to an aquarium is is important that they have been quarantined for a period of at least 30 days. Marine fish are held in crowded aquariums in collection facilities and local aquarium shops. Often these shops and facilities use one centralised filtration system meaning any disease or parasites entering the system on a fish will quickly spread between all of the fish sharing the same water. These health issues may only become apparent a few days or weeks after the fish have been purchased but if they are introduced to an aquarium the issues can quickly spread and wipe out all of the other fish in the aquarium.

RedFin have a strict quarantine procedure for any livestock supplied to customers. Livestock supplied by RedFin has been treated with anti parasite medication and sufficiently quarantined to ensure it is healthy and disease free.

Coral

RedFin focus on the importation of "farmed " coral which is not taken from the reef. RedFin also aquaculture small coral frags at

Jellyfish

RedFin Aquarium Design are partnered with Exotic Aquaculture who supply a range of jellyfish to the public aquarium and home aquarium trade. Exotic currently supply the widest range of jellyfish commectially available world wide.

Cyanide Fishing

Destructive collection practices are a big problem in the aquarium trade.  Fish are often caught using cyanide. This is an extremely destructive practice where liquid cyanide is squirted from a squeezy bottle into an area of coral.  Any fish in the vicinity are knocked unconscious.  They float out of their hiding places making them easy for divers to scoop up.

Cyanide fishing causes two main problems.  The first is that the toxic chemical will kill any coral in a 1-2m area around where it was released into the water.  Another issue is the health of the fish.  Cyanide stuns the fish but within a few hours they regain consciousness and most will seem healthy.  There is generally long-lasting damage to the fish's internal organs, meaning they may survive for a few days or weeks, but will ultimately perish due to damage sustained from exposure to cyanide.

Some unscrupulous Hong Kong aquarium shop owners will benefit from fish caught using cyanide because the fish will often dye within a few weeks of the customer taking it home.  Customers will often blame themselves for the death when it was really unavoidable with no chance of keeping the fish alive for any length of time.

RedFin always try and source aquacultured or sustainably sourced livestock.  Regular visits are also made to suppliers to ensure they are following our strict environmental policies.
