Types of Jellyfish Aquarium

Kreisel Jellyfish Aquariums

The word "kreisel" is German for "spinning top" or "gyroscope". A kreisel aquarium is an aquarium with a circular section in the centre which allows for a circular water flow. This type of aquarium is often used in aquaculture to rear delicate larvae or to display jellyfish. RedFin have developed an inexpensive, robust and easy to maintain kreisel jellyfish aquarium design. These tanks  can be built in a range of sizes up to 10m in length and 3m in height.

Cylinder Jellyfish Aquariums

RedFin have also developed a system allowing jellyfish to be kept in cylinder or tube  shaped aquariums. 1.5m wide by 2m tall jellyfish cylinders that were designed and built by RedFin can be seen on display at L'Oceanogràfic aquarium and Acuario de Sevilla in Spain.

‘Crawl Through’ Jellyfish Aquariums

Often referred to as a ‘doughnut’ jellyfish aquarium this innovative aquarium design allows children (and small adults!) to crawl through a hole in the center of the aquarium and experience jellyfish in a new and exciting way. The crawl through aquarium in this picture is displayed at Melbourne Aquariums Ocean Invaders exhibition. It was built by RedFin in 2020.

Some of the questions often asked when keeping jellyfish:

Can multiple jellyfish species be kept together?

People often ask if multiple types of jellyfish can be kept together or if other species such as clownfish can can be added to the tank. In the wild, lots of species of jellyfosh actually prey on other jellyfish species. If you mix two species in one tank there’s a strong posibility one will eat the other. Even if they don’t eat each other the stings of each species will probably irritate each other. There are some exceptions but its generally not advisable to mix jellyfish species.

Can jellyfish be mixed in an aquarium with fish?

People often also ask if fish can be mixed in with jellyfish. Lots of jellyfish species eat small fish in the wild. Even clownfish who live in stinging sea anemones are at risk of being eaten by jellyfish. It takes time for a clownfish to build up a tolerance to a sea anemones sting. Before moving inside an anemone, they touch it multiple times which helps them build a tolerance and a slime coat to protect from the anemones sting. A clownfish won’t have the opportunity to build up this tolerance to jellyfish tentacles when there are so many of them moving around an aquarium.
